Program Overview

The Master of Studies in Law (MSL) is a graduate degree for professionals seeking legal knowledge without becoming attorneys. The National Security and U.S. Foreign Relations Law concentration explores the nature and origins of the federal government’s foreign relations powers, including the way in which U.S. law implements international law and has an impact on national security. National Security and U.S. Foreign Relations Law students explore legal frameworks for the use of armed forces and intelligence operations abroad, counterterrorism, homeland security, management of crises, immigration, nonproliferation, treatment of detainees, congressional oversight, and classified information, along with key foreign relations law topics, such as multinational and bilateral treaties, separation of powers regarding foreign affairs, and diplomatic and sovereign immunity.

Located in the heart of Washington, DC, GW Law gives you unmatched access to the agencies, courts, diplomatic institutions, and policy leaders shaping U.S. national security and foreign affairs. No matter where you’re located, you learn from faculty with deep, real‑world experience across government, the military, international organizations, and global policy arenas. Their insider perspective—and our powerful professional network—connects your coursework to the issues that matter, opening doors to careers in national security strategy, diplomacy, intelligence, and international law.

What I valued most was the opportunity to learn from professors who are directly engaged in national security at the government level. Learning from first-hand knowledge professionals was priceless.
